Why Health Coaching Beats DIY Advice (From Someone Who Learned the Hard Way)

Health Coaching: More Than Just Advice

Health coaching is all about helping people reach their goals by figuring themselves out—think self-awareness, setting goals, and making a plan to get there. It’s not me barking orders like, “Eat this, do that!” Instead, it’s about helping someone see why they’re making changes and what they really want to shift in their life.
I became a health coach because of my own health win about 10 years ago. It was such a big deal that people kept asking, “How’d you do it?” I’ve written about this before (look how I have helped others), but I’m super shy and get emotional easily. So, honestly, I wasn’t great at giving advice back then—I fumbled it big time!
When you crush a health goal, everyone wants your secret sauce. But those chats can go sideways fast. Here’s why:

  1. Your Step-by-Step Isn’t Universal
You’re ready to share exactly what worked for you—awesome! You followed a plan (maybe with a trainer or doctor), and it paid off because you made it happen. But here’s the catch: you’re one of a kind. Even if you think you stuck to the script, your quirks probably shaped it. So, when you lay out your “perfect” plan, it might not click for them. Was it the diet—or was it you?
  2. They’re Not Ready Like You Were
Sometimes people ask about your success just to be nice. They’re not actually ready to dive in like you did. If you miss that vibe, you might ramble on about your process, and suddenly you’re that person who won’t stop talking. Awkward.
  3. They Try, But It Falls Apart
Other times, they’re pumped to try your way, but hit roadblocks. Maybe they lose steam, or maybe their own weird habits mess it up. They come back to you like, “Help! What’s wrong?” But you’re not a mind reader—you can’t tell if they’re slacking or if their version of “quirky” needs a tweak you can’t guess.

A Health Coach Beats a Well-Meaning Friend

If you’re that friend who’s killing it health-wise, that’s dope! But being a good buddy doesn’t mean you’ve got the skills to coach someone through it. A health coach is like a friend—only better. We’re trained to listen, spot what’s up, and guide without guessing. So, my tip? Tell them to grab a health coach.

Too Shy to Say That? Try These Instead

If pointing them to a pro feels weird, here are three simple things you can say:
“Focus on what you want, not what you don’t.”

“Talk it out—bounce your ideas off someone.”

“Give yourself a sec to think it over.”

These keep it chill and helpful without overstepping. Want to dig deeper into how coaching works? Check this out Health Coaching 101
