Hi! I’m Joel Perez, a certified health coach here to help you reach your wellness goals. I’m a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC) and an ADAPT Certified Functional Health Coach (A-CFHC). With over five years of experience and a background in science, I use proven methods to guide you toward a healthier life. I focus on practical steps, like eating a natural, ancestral diet and building healthy habits, to make lasting changes. As a husband and dad to a lively daughter, I know how tough it can be to balance health with everyday life, and I’m here to support you every step of the way.

My Health Story

I became a health coach because of my own journey. A while back, I struggled with weight gain that made me feel down and frustrated. I tried strict diets and intense workouts, but they left me tired and discouraged. When I asked doctors for help, they just told me to “eat less and move more,” which didn’t work for me.

Feeling stuck, I used my science knowledge to find answers. I discovered the Paleo diet, which focuses on natural foods our ancestors ate. It made sense to me and matched my understanding of how the body works. With help from my coaches, I tried it out and felt stronger, clearer, and more confident. This experience inspired me to help others facing similar struggles.

Outside of coaching, I’m a family man. I deal with the “dad bod” and the busyness of life, just like many of you. My journey keeps me relatable and motivates me to help you find simple, realistic ways to stay healthy.

My Professional Experience

I’ve built my career on education and real-world experience. I’m certified as a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC) and an ADAPT Certified Functional Health Coach through the Kresser Institute (2018–2019). These certifications taught me how to motivate people, build healthy habits, and make lasting changes.

Here’s a look at my work:

  • Karuna Labs, Inc. (2023–Present): I coach people over the phone, especially Spanish-speaking clients with chronic pain. I work with doctors to help clients follow their plans, eat better, and overcome challenges using proven methods.
  • Joel Perez Health Coaching (2019–Present): I run my own coaching business, helping clients make lifestyle changes and stick to their health plans with personalized support.
  • Health Revival Partners (2019–2020): I coached employees on nutrition, weight loss, exercise, stress, and quitting smoking. I created custom plans to lower health risks based on their needs.
  • Allied Health Roles (2004–2019): Before coaching, I worked in hospitals and labs as a surgical technologist, instrument technician, and lab technician. These jobs taught me to pay attention to details, understand science, and explain complex ideas clearly—skills I now use to help my clients.

My Education

My training gives me a strong foundation to help you. I earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Loyola Marymount University (1996–2007), where I learned how the body and nature work together. This helped me understand how to keep the body healthy and balanced. I also completed a Certificate in Health Professional Preparation at USC (1996–1999), which deepened my knowledge of health and helping diverse people.

I trained as a health coach through the ADAPT Health Coach Training Program at the Kresser Institute (2018–2019). This year-long program taught me:

  • How to boost confidence and motivation.
  • Ways to help clients overcome doubts and make changes.
  • How to communicate with kindness and understanding.
  • Science-based nutrition, including ancestral diets like Paleo.
  • How to address the root causes of health problems.

This training prepared me to earn my NBC-HWC certification and give you clear, science-backed advice.

Ongoing Learning

I’m always learning to be a better coach. Right now, I’m taking a Conflict Coaching Training course with Mediate Your Life (2025). It builds on my earlier training and teaches me how to help clients solve personal challenges, like emotional eating or stress with family or doctors. I’m learning to:

  • Turn stress or frustration into calm and understanding.
  • Help clients talk through tough situations.
  • Support clients in building healthier habits and relationships.

These skills help me guide you through obstacles so you can reach your goals.

Why I Love Health Coaching

I love health coaching because it’s about more than just physical health—it’s about helping you feel great in your body and mind. My own health journey, science background, and love for activities like hiking, trail running, and weightlifting inspire me to help you find joy in a healthy lifestyle. I’m especially passionate about ancestral diets, like Paleo, which helped me and can help you too.

As a bilingual coach, I’m dedicated to helping everyone, especially Spanish-speaking clients, feel supported. My training and ongoing learning ensure I provide the best care possible.
